Getting Started

Thank you for Joining Authors On The Net. Our mission is to help authors become expert at promoting their books online. This quick-start guide will help you get started in the right direction.

Step 1: Set up your profile

The future of business is collaboration. This trend is showing up in the form of many online communities. Authors On The Net is an author mastermind community. What this means is that you can search through the members of AON and establish mutually benefitting relationships. But before you begin to network, you need to set up your profile.

Once your profile is set up, you are ready to network. Search through the community and look for authors in your genre and begin to collaborate. Here are a few ideas:

• At AON, we recommend authors use a blog site as the centerpiece of all their marketing activities. You can visit community author blogs, leave comments and create links back and forth.
• You can collaborate with other members to cross promote. Maybe an author will send an email to his or her database introducing your book if you respond in kind.
• Visit other members' Amazon page and leave reviews and ask authors you connect with to do the same.

The above are some suggestions, but as you begin to interact with other members, you may find other ways to work together. Books are more complimentary than competitive. If you have a book on time management and another author has a book on time management, your target audience is similar and most likely readers will be willing to buy several books on the subject. This tactic of cross promotion helps Amazon increase its sales and it will help individual authors boost their sales as well.

Step 2: Your Book Ad and The Wall of Fame

If you already have a published book, one of the first action items is to create your ad. You will see how to do this in your profile. Once your ad is published, visitors to Authors On The Net can find your ad and click through to purchase a copy of your book. The ads appear in the "Pitch Your Book" section. Practice conveying the hook of your book in a few sentences. This comes in handy when pitching your book to publishers and potential readers.

We also have a fun section called the "Wall of Fame" where you can place your book cover for a one-time $1.00 charge. Our goal with this Wall of Fame is to create a newsworthy event and from time-to-time we will make our own press releases advertising Authors On The Net as the premiere site for established and emerging authors. Also, be sure to tell your own audience about being on the Authors On The Net's Wall of Fame. A little recognition never hurt anybody. If you blog, put a link to the Wall of Fame to direct your followers to see your ad.

Step 3: Submit Your Press Release

In our Press Release section, you can submit a press release for your book. Press Releases are a powerful tool to promote your books and we have articles in our "Promote Your Book" learning section on how to submit press releases on the Internet. If you are unfamiliar with Press Releases, be sure to read this section.

Step 4: Subscribe to the Author Blog

We use the Author Blog to keep our members aware of current events and new ideas about book promotion. You can also be a guest blogger and if you have a blog entry you would like us to post send it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Besides sharing your wisdom with the author community, you will also create a link to your own blog, which is always a good idea.

Step 5: The Author Blast Podcast Show

Each month Authors On The Net's founder, Phil Davis, interviews authors and other experts. The format for an author interview is to first discuss the author's book and second to discuss how the author is promoting his or her book. So far, every author we have interviewed has shared some unique way to promote books.

 Step 6: The Author Forums

Many authors have discovered the value of participating in forums around the web. The Authors On The Net's forum is a great place to learn new ideas and connect with the community.

Step 7: Share Your Book Trailer

In our book trailer section, we've made it easy for you to upload your book trailer or other relevant video.

Step 8: Learn All About Book Publishing and Book Promotion

Once you login, you will have access to your User Menu. In this menu, you will see our sections on Book Publishing and Book Promotion. We have hundreds of articles on how to publish and promote a book. Our members have told us that Authors On The Net is the best place they've found on the web to find comprehensive information about book publishing and promotion. That's good because that is our goal. Come often, especially when you have a question.
