Book Writing: Using Styles in Microsoft Word

February 22nd, 2008

When writing a book, and submitting it to a publisher it is important to give your manuscript a professional look. The best way I’ve found to do that is by using styles.

Some people will tell you that MS Word is not the best program to use for a book manuscript, but it is the program most users have on their computer, and Word is a format accepted by most publishers. Publishers have their own typesetters and use book set up programs they like best. Since Word is easy to use and has a lot of good features for writers, I’ll share some tips about using styles in Word. Read the rest of this entry »

Any Author Can Use Video to Promote A Book

February 19th, 2008

I just watched the Pixar animation, Ratatouille, a story about a rat who becomes a chef in a Paris restaurant called Gusteaus. In the movie, Anton Gusteau, founder of Gusteaus, publishes a book titled, “Anyone Can Cook.” This same idea holds true for authors wanting to promote their books with videos. Any author can make a video to promote his or her book and then distribute that video over the Internet.

I am not an expert on this subject, which makes me the perfect person to be writing about making videos and putting them on the Internet. Here’s how I became a video producer: Read the rest of this entry »

How to find sales data

February 15th, 2008

We have one document in our download section you might find useful to answer this question (login to Authors On The Net, go to Author Tools/Downloads) Here are some other ideas:

Title Z www.titlez.com: Amazon Sales Rank Article

Since its beginning, Amazon.com has displayed a “sales rank” number with every book it stocks on its website. This number is like the numbers used on a booksellers top 10 list–the best-selling book is ranked #1, the next best-selling title is #2, and the tenth best-selling tome is #10. But at Amazon, they rank every single book in their inventory–all the way up to around 2.5 million! And they update their sales ranks constantly–the top selling books are typically re-ranked every hour.
So, what’s a good sales rank? Read the rest of this entry »

Tips To Market Your Self-Published Book

February 12th, 2008

As you may have guessed by now, Authors On The Net is all about book promotion. Today’s article by Arindam Bhattacharya sums up pretty well what authors can do today to promote their books. You can find out more by registering to Authors On The Net and delving into the content.

The fact is that there are so many ways to promote your book today you may feel overwhelmed. The key is to build a plan and implement your plan step-by-step. Some steps take time, like blogging. But your book does not have shelf-life prescribed by a publisher. Every listing you make online, every post you make on your blog, every comment you leave on someone else’s blog will be on the Internet for a long time. And as Sun Tzu says, “opporutities multiply as they are seized.” Here’s today’s article: Read the rest of this entry »

Full Of Hope And Fear - The Unknown Author Braves Publishing

February 8th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=June_Ahern]June Ahern

I signed the contract yesterday to self-publish my first fictional novel, one that I had patiently attempted to find an agent or publisher to see its worth. Alas, it was not to be in my time frame of patience thus I forged on to self publish.

I just uploaded the manuscript, bio with picture and the book cover. They’ll get back to me. Them - those I found on the web after a haphazard search. That path to finding the “right” POD company has been a journey of - duh? how? should I?, oh no! now what? - and finally, oh, what the heck.

Once, I read on a Writer’s Forum where one person wrote, “Self-publishing authors only do to stroke their egos.” And I say, so? The majority of artist need a stroking of the ego as it can help to validate one’s art and worth. He continued, “If their work was any good an agent would have picked it up.” No. Even agents will tell you this isn’t so.

So, I stroke on, patting my back while telling myself, “Publish this story. It’s worth it. It’s good. Your mother told you it is.”

Anyway, I admit that my fictional novel isn’t to enlighten the world or be the world’s best seller. It’s a fun, touching piece of my imagination. I like the story, my people will like the story or at least, as one client said if she doesn’t, she’ll comment with, “Well, at least you fulfilled your goal” pulling a line from me, her life coach. And, to those who say, “Some authors take 10 years or more to bring finish their books” I say, the earth is spinning faster - so, to you, new authors and wanna be authors, I say, go for it. Follow through. Do it right, hire an editor and proof reader. Don’t, just don’t spend a lot of money on your first edition.Order the amount you believe you can sell and then stretch your goal a bit, and order a few more. There’s always the cashier at your local 711 and gas station. If nothing else you’ve got your Christmas gifts already.

I took a risk - I stretched my vision - out - further - like walking the plank while pulling the wrist free from the tied ropes. It is like walking down a dark alley after mid-night and repeating, “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts.” Good luck, new self-published authors!
